Z eyes an Iron Steak

Having put off the decision to choose another car - I'm not really indecisive, unless I don't care much except that it matters if I go for the wrong thing - the little bugger has gone wrong again. That's it, I'm getting another one and will worry about the present one being pretty well worthless afterwards. It'll have to be a cheapie, as I don't happen to have any money. The Sage will rescue me. C'est son metier. Friend Mike is on the case and at present it seems likely to be a Peugeot. The brother of a friend has a splendid-sounding Mercedes he's about to sell, which the Sage was rather tempted to buy me (it's 12 years old, but in excellent nick) until I pointed out the 3 litre engine.

Talking about having no money, I didn't have to check my bank balance today. A cheque arrived for the Sage. *Sigh*. Although he made initial enquiries with the agents, we explained the flat is mine, and my name and signature are on the lease. I sent them my bank details for the payments to be made directly into my account. I'll email the person I sent that info to in the first instance, and follow up if I'm not happy with her reply.

And I went to the blood donor clinic and my blood wasn't good enough. I'm slightly anaemic. I'm going to go and get a supplement and give myself a boost. And eat steak. Lots and lots of steak.

and prawns, I went and gave blood the other night, and fainted! I have been giving it years and that's never happen before.

Not that it's relevant at all, and I hope you'll forgive me for overspilling, but I've got a man in my house tonight who is threatening to cook me a steak for dinner on Friday. How does a lady back-pedal, I wonder? Male people are a tricky old mess, to my mind.

In other news, giving blood ain't all it's cracked up to be, and at least you haven't got AIDS. They need ethnic minority blood anyway, and I can't help with that. Did you know that? There's a shortage, in particular of asian blood-types. I know this because a haematologist told me. Very nice chap actually x

Can I have some steak please Z?

eddie - you should cook your own like i do (not counting a man that does it for you); z is not your mum, even if she is a bit naughty. If i was her mum she wouldn't get no supper. She knows what she did.

I'm not allowed steak.

Yeah, so?

I bet you've even been to sleep like a baby!

I wish I was allowed steak.

I've been sleeping like a normal sensible grown-up human being.

And I'm not allowed red meat, because it may be one factor in causing my stones. I like beef, so that makes me annoyed.

And I still get stones, which hurt, and leave me run down (and the constant open wound probably makes me anaemic, but I can't eat steak to solve that) and all in all it's enough to make me irritable.

Which I am, just a bit.

Last time, a girl felt faint and she'd never done so before. Odd, isn't it?

Well, Dand, at one time my sister would have died without blood transfusions, so while giving it may not be much, receiving it might be.

And Dave, I've not had much strength the past few weeks and I think this is the reason. And it wouldn't have occurred to me to get my blood checked, so I'm glad it's happened. It might not be a bad idea to ask for a blood test. Being severely anaemic is very depressing and exhausting (I'm not, but I have been in the past) and you might need an iron supplement too.

Simon, darling, didn't mean to leave you out. Of course you can have steak. Dandelion doesn't appreciate the importance of being given steak.

Anaemic, Z? Come join the club...

If it's any consolation, my HB was 5.6 about 4 months ago (it's now 11.6 and rising, yay!).

If you need some iron food tips that are kidney kind too let me know, in the meantime, there's always black pudding.

Indeed, Ad, I'm not being sorry for myself, only glad that I know about it and can put it right, eating anything I fancy. I'm lucky to be able to. I remember years ago, when pregnant and having iron injections because my HB was somewhere below 10, talking to a friend with leukaemia, who was having monthly blood transfusions and who normally lived with a reading of 6 or 7. I never minded after that.

Right now, I'd eating watercress and drinking Guinness. Dave might appreciate some recipes though.

Ooh, and 11.6? Gosh, you'll be normal before you know it xx

Recipe for anemia

Cook, per serving, two strips of bacon crisp in a fry pan. Set aside to drain. Add half a medium sized onion, thinly sliced, and cook til tender but not browned. Salt and pepper the onions to taste as well as 4-6 ounces of thinly sliced beef liver then dredge the liver in flour. Move the onions to the sides of the fry pan. Turn the heat up a bit and add the liver. Saute' briefly, til the flour is just browned nicely or to your own taste. Place the crispy bacon on top and pile on the onions.

Works for me.

I love liver, LZM, but I don't often eat it as the Sage and Ro aren't that keen, although Ro likes chicken or duck liver pâté. I now have a splendid excuse to indulge - thank you!

Actually, I totally do appreciate the importance of steak. Which was kind of my point, but I wasn't expressing myself well.

And what I meant about the blood transfusions was that if your blood is not "acceptable" to them, well there could be worse reasons why. I have a family member who would have died were it not for 8 pints of donated blood, so I do get where you're coming from. I just don't like to see you give yourself a hard time. x

Offal is especially bad for kidney stones - 100 times worse than steak - so liver is definitely out. Thank goodness.

It was a lovely steak.
