And some are surprised by joy at the birth of their first baby.

But some people seem to take little pleasure in their children and that's sad. Tough enough, growing up.Zhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00822383355869390919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21602861.post-34386954388261466942007-02-02T13:58:00.000+00:002007-02-02T13:58:00.000+00:00I'm not sure childcare was ever really valued. Why not leave it to people who are committed? Though I can see that might sound a bit extreme.

If some parents are frustrated and unhappy, then I would say that's as much to do with their role not being valued, as to do with its inherent stress/repetitiveness, or their aptitude for it.

The devaluing of parenting seems to be premissed on a denial of, or failure to grasp any basic psychology, and the long-reaching impact of parenting quality on the society of tomorrow.

And I don't think it does give a very nice message to the children to be viewed as a chore or a burden, or just plain boring. It's no wonder a lot of them are pissed off, and lack the skills to deal with that constructively. Well said, zMonozygotehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04965915993980593549noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21602861.post-73216044242988290552007-02-02T13:39:00.000+00:002007-02-02T13:39:00.000+00:00I think it would really help if people were not so...I think it would really help if people were not so aggressively defensive over their own choice - that if it works for them, it must be the best.

And also, that people who do not earn a wage are valued for what they do do. It can be hard to feel a sense of self-worth when you do not have a pay packet and are dismissed as 'justamum' or 'justahousewife'.
But equally, fulltime working parents need to be allowed flexibility and not to be considered shirkers if they want to leave on time to have some family life too.Zhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00822383355869390919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21602861.post-34105205341274325142007-02-02T13:30:00.000+00:002007-02-02T13:30:00.000+00:00I'd agree it needs a much larger horizon on this i...I'd agree it needs a much larger horizon on this issue. From a pure societal cost, we need to look at if a child with a parent at home is more productive in life than one which is brought up in shared child care. Its not an easy question, nor an easy answer.

Nor do I think there is a blanket answer. Ms Mills sweeping generalities are a bit of a hard swallow. I agree with you that some full time mothers love it, mine did. My wife though, doesn't and enjoys her job.

The question is, how do we as a society develop as system that caters to both freedoms? Not easy. The Boyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06052411992134880131noreply@blogger.com
