However, they were too useful for keeping oddments in and they were never used for their designed purpose.Zhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00822383355869390919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21602861.post-5134052802579547502012-08-29T19:50:31.742+01:002012-08-29T19:50:31.742+01:00Hello Z. In about 1960, when Ann and I were 'courting'- quaint, old fashioned phrase- Ann took me to see a great aunt of hers who lived in Hunstanton. After I'd been introduced to Aunt Maud (everybody had one) she (aunt Maud that is) said to me "Do help yourself to a cigarette, Michael" and pointed to two mahogany boxes on the sideboard. "There's Turkish on the right and Virginian on the left." Afterwards I asked Ann if her great aunt smoked. She told me that she didn't but always kept fresh cigarettes in case any gentlemen visitors wished to. When I got to know Aunt Maud better she told me that although she'd never smoked herself "Ladies didn't in my young days, dear boy" she did in fact rather like the smell of tobacco about the house. I must say I always admired Aunt Maud's principles of hospitality.
